Imagine a darkened theater. The music starts, the curtain raises, and a young woman in a familiar blue and white dress makes her way across the stage—en pointe. This weekend, Alamo Arts Ballet Theatre (AABT) presents, “Alice! A Ballet Wonderland,” on stage at the Carver Community Cultural Center.

Chances are, your kids already know “Alice In Wonderland” from Disney’s live action movies, the classic animated film, or even Lewis Carroll’s stories about the titular heroine who falls down a rabbit hole into an enchanted world. What makes “Alice! A Ballet Wonderland” perfect for all ages is its reliance on movement, pantomime, dance, and music to tell the story.

“It’s a perfect first ballet to take young children to experience,” says Judith Gani, AABT’s founder and Executive Director, “especially because they may see kids their own age on stage.”

Kids as young as seven who audition for the children’s cast get roles in the production, taking parts like bashful oysters, or hedgehogs during a second-act croquet game, a favorite of both the audience and the Queen of Hearts! The whole cast includes professional dancers, as well as local company members from Alamo Arts Ballet Theatre and the children’s cast, which numbers close to two dozen roles.

The plot follows the story of Alice as she chases the White Rabbit down to Wonderland, to a tea party with the Mad Hatter and Cheshire Cat, and into hot water with the Queen of Hearts, who is none too pleased with Alice’s superior croquet skills! A happy intervention by the Mad Hatter saves the day, and Alice returns home to awaken from her dream.

The bright colors, cheerful costumes, and music by Tchaikovsky and Danny Elfman hold the attention of fidgety children, and adults will admire the elegance and athleticism of the dancers as they tell the story through movement.

“Alice! A Ballet Wonderland” takes place at the Carver Community Cultural Center on Saturday, September 23 at 7:30 p.m. and again on Sunday, September 24 at 3:00 p.m.

The production is not a presentation of the Carver Community Cultural Center or the Carver Development Board. Tickets are available through Ticketmaster, Ticketmaster.com, the Alamodome and at the Carver Community Cultural Center Box Office.
