As Templeton tells it: Maverick Dog Park

Maverick Dog Park in San Antonio

Coming soon to San Antonio: Maverick Dog Park: a state-of-the-art, ecologically-conscious, sustainable, community-funded dog park just north of downtown San Antonio. I could fill you in on all of the details but I think I’ll let my BFF (best four-legged friend) fill you in since he’s got a vested interest in the success of this new park.

What’s up, pups? Templeton here. I’m an Instagram star, stuffed animal enthusiast, Parkaholic, and, most importantly, Colleen’s sidekick (seriously – I never leave her side and I refuse to eat if she goes out of town. Dedication. That’s my middle name.).

Templeton tells us about Maverick Dog Park in San Antonio

I’m a yellow lab mix with a pink nose and golden eyes. When she found me, my foster mom (the great Molly Cox, with SA2020) named me Templeton because, although I looked like a pig (therefore, a Wilbur, a la Charlotte’s Web), she deemed that popular swine name too obvious.

Instead, she named me after the rat, Templeton, also from Charlotte’s Web. Thought you were pretty clever that time didn’t you, Mollymom? But, joke’s on you. I’m nothing like that selfish, slop-eating rat. I’m a distinguished, refined gentleman. Unless I see a squirrel. Then it’s GAME ON, suckas.

My mom, Colleen, wrote about Maverick Park last year during her visit to 20 San Antonio parks but she didn’t take me with her that time.

Maverick Park in San Antonio will become a dog park

But I didn’t miss going because, while it’s a decent enough place for a quick stroll, there isn’t much for us dogs to get excited about, other than the occasional tree. Holla if you love a good tree, y’all. *lifts leg in salute*

But that’s about to change.

Enter Maverick DOG Park. Yup. A place just for us. Well, our humans will probably enjoy it too. But I’m putting the squirrels ON NOTICE.

Map of what Maverick Dog Park will look like in San Antonio

It’s going to have:

* a dog agility area (AKA a playground for dogs!)
* a creek for water recreation (AKA splish, splash, splosh. All. Day. Long.)
* a wash tub (Boo hiss to this – clean is overrated.)
* separate areas for large and small dogs (Hmmm. Can’t we all just get along?)
* and a terrain play area (More playtime = more fun.)

There are several clever humans working to make this doggie dream a reality. But they can’t do it alone. Check it out: you (and your dog!) are invited to the kick off party for the Maverick Dog Park Crowdfunding Campaign Launch this Tuesday, May 12, at GS1221, from 5:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. If you can’t make it to the party, you can donate online here (Alamo Beer is matching funds).

  3. I love the map and ideas for this park! Sorry Templeton but putting a wash tub in at the dog park is brilliant! I love bringing my pups to the dog park but hate bringing them home from Phil Harberdger because they get all muddy and thus get my car muddy because no matter how I try to put a sheet down they always try not to stay on it!
