Free art for kids in San Antonio and the Weekly Link Up for March 3 - 9, 2014

Thanks to a friendly invitation for a meetup/play date from Inga with San Antonio Charter Moms, Delaney, Waylon, and I attended First Sunday for Families at the San Antonio Museum of Art yesterday. This monthly event is free for kids 12 and under and adults are just $10 each. You can also get an annual family membership for $85 and adults can attend First Sunday for Families every month at no additional cost.

If you haven’t attended First Sunday for Families yet, put it on your calendar right away. Art activities, music, snacks, full access to the galleries, and a kid-friendly atmosphere (something you don’t find every day at art museums) are all included, making it a steal. Delaney loved the hands-on art activities. Waylon adored strolling (OK, sometimes running) through the galleries, looking at the art and making new friends. He was quite partial to the snacks, too. Me? I had fun introducing my kids to words like “sarcophagus” and discussing how mosaics are made. And I secretly loved watching them giggle and point at the anatomically correct statues sprinkled throughout the Greek and Roman collections. Ah, innocence.

Another free, family-friendly art event comes to San Antonio this month on Saturday, March 22. Artpace Family Day 2014 celebrates Contemporary Art Month with free tours, art workshops, hands-on activities, music, food, and more.

What artistic events and activities stir your soul? Are you writing about them this week? Or do you have a great DIY art project to share?

Whatever you’re blogging about this week, I can’t wait to see it. Share it here on the San Antonio Mom Blogs’ Weekly Link Up:

  1. Oh how I love the Artpace Day in town!! and SAMA always has something going on the kids love. Thanks for the reminders, I need to add these to my calendar!

  2. I’m so glad you all could meet us at the museum, especially on such short notice. Did you know the temperature dropped 25 degrees while we were inside the museum? I’m glad we were playing inside.

I was so impressed with Delaney’s weaving. And did you see all the careful cutting-out that F.T. did on his cricket cage? SAMA’s activities always seem to inspire kids to try to give their very best.

    • You’re right, Ina. The art activities at SAMA were very focused and encouraged kids to try new things and work hard at them. And I thought it was great that there were a variety of activities for all ages.

  3. I can’t wait for the family day at Artpace–thanks for the reminder!
