December is such a beautiful month! Christmas lights, cool temperatures, no school, and so many fun events around the city. I’ve got a great list for you for this month’s Free in San Antonio: December 2015!

Tuesday, December 1: The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway, 78209, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Free at The DoSeum! Only the first 1,500 guests will be admitted so arrive early! Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum.

Tuesday, December 1: The Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market Street, 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Free Tuesday Nights at the Briscoe Western Art Museum! Everyone gets in free on Tuesday nights from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to enjoy special programs, music, and more. Tonight the program includes a book club (at 5:30 p.m. discussing Wild by Cheryl Strayed) and a Gallery Talk (6:30 p.m. discussing Photography and the West). And, remember: during all other open days/times, the Briscoe offers free admission, year-round, to children 12 and under and to all active military and their families (up to 4 people).

Wednesday, December 2: Krispy Kreme (1117 North Loop 1604 East, 78232 and 12328 IH 10 West, 78230), 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Free Family Night at Krispy Kreme: donut decorating, crafts, and games for all ages.

Thursday, December 3: Shoney’s, 8206 N Interstate 35, 78239, all day while supplies last
Shoney’s is saying Thank You, Happy Holidays, and Merry Christmas again this year with its annual national FREE Hot Fudge Cake Day, on Thursday, December 3, 2015. There is a limit of one dessert per guest and is available for dine-in only. No purchase required.

Thursday, December 3: Jewish Community Center, 12500 NW Military Hwy., 78231, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.Free parenting workshop by Laine Lipski: How to Give Authentic Praise in Our Culture of “Everything is Awesome!” In an effort to help build children’s self-esteem, our culture has gone a bit overboard with trophies, awards, and praise. Good sense (and tons of research) tells us that this does not actually make children more confident – in fact, it does the opposite. So what’s a caring parent to do? How do we deliver praise to our children in a way that sinks in and actually helps them build a positive sense of self? Come to this workshop and find out! Tea and goodies will be served. Friday, December 4: Friedrich Wilderness Park Classroom, 78256, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Starting out Wild – Deer, Oh Deer! Children, ages 1 to 3, are invited to learn about deer through stories, songs, and hands-on fun! These high energy, engaging programs are a perfect way to foster an appreciation of the natural world. It is recommended that a child be walking and a parent or caretaker attend with each child. Most classes will take place outdoors. RSVP required. Call 210-207-3782.

Saturday, December 5: Phil Hardberger Park West (Urban Ecology Center), 8400 N.W. Military Highway, 78231, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Urban Forestry in San Antonio. How is our city’s urban forest doing? Ross Hosea, City of San Antonio Urban Forester, explains. Also learn how to plant a tree and adopt a free 1-gallon tree (limited to the first 25 families). A kid-friendly craft is included. The event is free to attend (but a suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per family is welcomed).

Saturday, December 5: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will build holiday stacking blocks. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, Decmber 5: North Central Baptist Hospital, 520 Madison Oak Dr., 78258, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
Join North Central Baptist Hospital and Welcome Home for their Winter Celebration! Activities include: AirLIFE Santa and Mrs. Claus, a winter playground with real snow, holiday arts & crafts, mini carnival rides, free health risk assessments, NEISD school performances, food, games and more. Get a photo with Santa if you bring an unwrapped toy for ‘Living Through Giving’. For more information, call: 866-218-4742.

Free craft for kids. This week kids create a Wintery Snowglobe.

Saturday, December 5: Friedrich Wilderness Park, 78256, 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Celebrate all things red and green this holiday season with a Holiday Hike! From the evergreen sumac, and mysterious mistletoe to the mighty Ashe Juniper trees—enjoy the sights, sounds and smells of the winter holidays. Following the holiday hike, participants can paint a unique holiday-inspired ornament, or juniper wreath. Email nicole.mcleod@sanantonio.gov to make your reservations. Saturday, December 5: San Antonio River Authority, 10 Brooklyn Ave. San Antonio, TX 78215, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Museum Reach River of Lights Kickoff Celebration – Experience the spirit of the holidays on Museum Reach segment of the San Antonio River Walk and enjoy a display of holiday lights and special treats. You’ll see Santa’s Wonderland on the Brooklyn Ave. Bridge, holiday music barges along museum reach and holiday music by DJ Steven Lee Moya on the river level.

Free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.) AND First Sundays for Families: Discover India (12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) Explore the art of India by painting an Indian miniature and hear stories in the Indian gallery. Kids get free admission. After 12:00 p.m., adults pay $10 each.

Sunday, December 6: Trader’s Village, 9333 SW Loop 410 near Old Pearsall Road, 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.Trader’s Village will host their second annual “Toys for Tots” Toy Drive. The Marines, Squirrel Squad Car Club and Traders Village will join forces to collect toys for children who would otherwise not receive a toy from Santa. Registration for the car show requires a toy for a child. The Marines will have containers available for all toys collected. Please feel free to bring a toy! The event is free, but parking is $3. Santa will be available to take photos for $5.

Lowe’s Build and Grow. Your child will build a holiday train as part of Lowe’s Build & Grow series. PLEASE NOTE: registration for this event opens soon and fills quickly! Here’s where to register.

Saturday, December 12: Cibolo Nature Center, Herff Farm, 33 Herff Rd, Boerne, TX, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Kid’s Club: Winter Bird Feeders! – Come have some fun as we discover about the different kinds of fruits, nuts and seeds that birds enjoy. We will be making winter bird feeders that you can take home for the bird friends in your own backyard. No drop-offs. Suggested donation of $5 per family. Friedrich Wilderness Park Second Saturday Program! Meet Tom Kinsey, Master Naturalist and animal lover and explore some of the living things around us and learn what makes them special. Saturday, December 12: Medina River Natural Area Pavilion, 15890 Highway 16 S., 78264, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Medina River Natural Area Second Saturday Program. Join us for a STAR PARTY! The San Antonio Astronomical Association will bring their high tech telescopes for participants to view the stars and the planets in the early evening. A great video of the universe will be included, weather permitting. Refreshments and a kid-friendly craft are included. Free to attend but a suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per family is welcomed.

Free parenting workshop by Laine Lipski. Here’s to YOU: A Workshop Devoted to Self-Care. When flying with children on an airplane, parents are told to, “put on your own oxygen mask first.” The same principle applies to parenting: if we are not taking care of ourselves, we cannot possibly take good care of our children. Join us as we spend some time to nourish ourselves and make a personal, practical plan for ongoing self-care. Call to Register: (210) 207-2703.

Sunday, December 13, Institute of Texan Cultures, 801 E. César E. Chávez Blvd., 78205, 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Winter Celebrations Around the World. Free admission to the Institute of Texan Cultures for December’s free Second Sunday. Enjoy traditional holiday displays from 15 different countries created by exchange students from around the world. Also included in this free family event are hands-on activities: paper lanterns, piñatas, coloring pages and holiday cards. And, the troupe from Our Lady of Guadalupe church performs a traditional Mexican Pastorela morality play. Please bring non-perishable food to donate to the San Antonio Food Bank.

Mother Nature’s Storytime: Reindeer! – Let’s celebrate the holiday season as we read “Little Polar Bear and the Reindeer” and then we’ll make reindeer ornaments to take home. Urban Birds. Greg and Jana Gibbons, Master Naturalists and avid birders, use fun and games to teach how to identify urban birds found in San Antonio. A kid-friendly activity is included. The program is presented by the Alamo Area Texas Master Naturalists, the Sierra Club, the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy and San Antonio Parks & Recreation. Saturday, December 19, The Residences at La Cantera, 6215 Via la Cantera, 78256, 3:00 p.m.
Snow Wonderland and Movie in the Park! Visit the park at the Residences at La Cantera to see 40,000 pounds of snow transform the area into a winter wonderland. Snow starts at 3:00 p.m. and the movie, Elf, begins at 5:45 p.m. Treats and food trucks will also be on hand.

Saturday, December 19, Travis Park, 301 E Travis St, 78205, opens at 6:00 p.m., movie at 7:00 p.m.
Centro presents: The Elf Movie Party in Travis Park. Be dazzled by the 250,000 holiday lights adorning Travis Park and enjoy an epic ELF Movie Party featuring all sorts of fun props (while supplies last), a themed contest, a snowball fight AND a special Holiday Sing Along preshow hosted by our friends from Alamo Drafthouse Cinemas. And, San Antonio’s own Elf in the City, Pat, will be on hand for photos. There will be jingle bells for everyone, bubbles for a few key scenes, and a special scratch n’ sniff card so you can Smell-Along with Buddy and his family. The event will also feature food trucks, beer/wine booth, the Glow Roll SA & more.

Celebrate San Antonio is the city’s official New Year’s Eve Celebration and Fireworks Extravaganza. This FREE downtown festival features three stages of live music performances, carnival games and rides, delicious festival food (gorditas, mini-tacos, barbeque and funnel cakes) and a fireworks show at midnight.
