Wasn’t it just the first of the year?! I can’t believe we are in the last month of 2016 and looking at holiday decorations. There are so many fun, Free in San Antonio events to take advantage of so, without further adieu, here we go!

We’ve made every effort to ensure that this list is accurate and up-to-date, however, some venues/events/activities make changes without notifying us. We recommend contacting them before visiting to be 100% sure that their free offerings are still available.

San Antonio | The Saga. This free video art installation, created by Xavier De Richemont, plays three times a night, weather permitting, on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the facade of San Fernando Cathedral.

The San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers (SALSA) offers free stargazing to the public every Wednesday evening beginning at sunset.

Guardian House will host our first annual Night for los Niños Art Fundraiser & Vendor Exhibition. Start your holiday shopping during this family-friendly event; which includes live music, food trucks, art sales, children’s art activities, vendor booths and so much more.

Every First Friday we bring the Hemisfair Art Market to the park, plus music, food and fun activities to keep your whole family moving!

Join a trail Steward on the Howard W. Peak Greenway Trail System and learn about the trails, trail safety and trail etiquette. Free, no reservation required. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Saturday, December 3: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will build a Gingerbread Man Candy Dish. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, December 3: The Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, Texas 78205, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
First Saturday at The Alamo! On the first Saturday of every month, the grounds of the Alamo are transformed back in time to the 1830s. Visit for a full day of living history fun that the whole family will enjoy. Learn about life in frontier Texas with special demonstrations and crafts.

Saturday, December 3, at participating Lowe’s stores, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Your child will build Christmas Ornaments as part of the Lowe’s Build and Grow program. PLEASE NOTE: registration for this event opens November 21 and fills quickly! Here’s where to register.

You have been invited to an amazing Winterfest at the Raymond Russell Park! Join us along with several amazing food and artisan vendors for a fun filled day of Santa, Snow, Pony Rides, Horse and Carriage, Carnival Rides, Toy Drive, Live Entertainment and MORE!! Winterfest has FREE admission, parking, and a park and ride available to guest. Head down to Hemisfair for a Bubble Blast! All bubbles welcome on the lawn.

Saturday, December 3: San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W Jones Ave., 78215, 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
The San Antonio River Authority will throw the switch on the holiday lighting of the Museum Reach. Enjoy live jazz music from the passing river barges plus Santa’s Wonderland and art activities on Brooklyn Avenue near the lock and dam. The Museum Reach Lighting is from 6 to 9 p.m. BONUS: The Museum will be open with free admission from 4 to 9 p.m.

Saturday, December 3: Mitchell Lake, 10750 Pleasanton Rd., 78221, 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Join us for live animal presentations, night hikes, evening garden workshop, games, and nature crafts for all ages. Bring: flashlights or headlamps, lawn chairs, bug spray, binoculars, field guides, and dress for the weather. Snacks and drinks (water, soda, hot tea, and hot cocoa) available for purchase in the Nature Gift Shop! Free but a $5 donation is suggested.

Learn about the owls in our area and enjoy a 1/2-mile walk to listen to owls calling at night. Susan Campbell, PHP Education Coordinator, presents Owl Prowl. Free but registration is required and a donation of $3/ person OR $5/ family is suggested.

Join Slab Cinema for Movies by Moonlight. The movie is The Goonies. Get there early for a good spot. The movie will start at dusk.

Sunday, December 4: Friedrich Wilderness Park, 21395 Milsa Drive, 78256, 9:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Center yourself with an introduction to easy Tai Chi for physical and personal development at Friedrich Wilderness Park. All levels welcome. RSVP required at www.fosana.org. Loose clothing and walking shoes recommended. Suggested donation of $3 per person or $6 per family.

Free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

First Sundays for Families*: Journey Up the Nile! (11:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
Join us for an Egyptian expedition at the museum!  Sculpt a clay canopic jar, write your name in hieroglyphics and make an Anubis or Thoth mask. Kids 12 and under get free admission. After 12:00 p.m., adults pay $10 each. *PLEASE NOTE* new time for First Sunday for Families beginning in January, 2016: 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Sunday, December 4: Trader’s Village, 9333 SW Loop 410 near Old Pearsall Road, 12:30 p.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Trader’s Village will host their third annual “Toys for Tots” Toy Drive. The Marines, Squirrel Squad Car Club and Traders Village will join forces to collect toys for children who would otherwise not receive a toy from Santa. Registration for the car show requires a toy for a child. The Marines will have containers available for all toys collected. Please feel free to bring a toy! The event is free, but parking is $4. Santa will be available to take photos for $5.

Monday, December 5: Yanaguana Gardens, 434 S Alamo St, 78205, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Imagination Playground at Hemisfair. This free, organized play event at Yanaguana Garden takes place every Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tuesday, December 6: Whole Foods Quarry Market, 255 E Basse Rd #130, 78209, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Join Whole Foods at the Quarry Market Cafe, the first Tuesday of every month, for the Kids Club Story Time. There will be a story, a snack and some fun activities! This monthly event is free – register here.

Tuesday, December 6: The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway, 78209, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Free admission to The DoSeum on the first and third Tuesday of every month! Only the first 1,200 guests will be admitted so arrive early. Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum. The cafe will be open with food and drinks for sale.

H-E-B Cinema on the Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy ELF! Snuggle up with blankets and enjoy hot chocolate on the Plaza under the glow of the Tobin Center. The plaza will open an hour before the movie starts. No outside food or drinks are allowed, but concessions will be available for purchase- including full bar service. No Pets Please.

Saturday, December 10, Phil Hardberger Park West, 8400 NW Military Highway, 78231, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Native American Story Telling with Grandmother Coyote, Emma Ortega. She tells stories about the spirit animals and what they have to teach us.  Kids make a Balero game to take home. This is a wonderful program for families with elementary and older children. Free and no registration is required but a donation of $3/ person OR $5/ family is suggested.

Free Family Art Day takes place at Inspire Art every second Saturday of the month.

Silver Bells in the City presents a magical evening for the entire family! It begins with Carolers in traditional Dickens attire strolling throughout the plaza singing holiday songs. Disney “Frozen” Characters; Queen Elsa, Princess Anna, and Olaf will be available for personal photo opportunities. Then, at 5:30PM the Travis Park Ringers perform special holiday arrangements and don’t forget your family photo with Santa in front of the Bexar County Courthouse from 6:00PM-9:00PM **This is the rescheduled date!**

Free admission on the second Sunday of each month. Celebrate the season and the variety of festive occasions around the world, the UTSA Institute of Texan Cultures will host its “Winter Celebrations Around the World.” The San Antonio Food Bank will be accepting non-perishable food items to assist in this increased time of need. Additionally, they will offer demonstrations throughout the day, focusing on nutrition, accessing local foods, and making the most of leftovers. Guests will have the opportunity to assemble their own trail mix.

Saturday, December 17: La Villita, 418 Villita St., 78205, 12:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Univision will host Fiesta Navideña at La Villita. Free admission to get to the festivities at La Villita but after 6pm, a ticket will be required for entry to to the concert. The event is family friendly and all ages are welcome. Kids 12 and under are admitted into the event with an unwrapped new toy or a $10 donation. The toys will be donated to local kids from a local non-profit organization.

Saturday, December 17: 531 FM 3351 N., Boerne, TX 78006, 5:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
2nd Annual Christmas in the Park fundraiser for Toys for Tots! This is a free event to families, but we ask each attendee to bring a toy for donation at the door to enter the event. There will be booth vendors, dance performances, live music, Santa Claus pictures, food trucks, playground, 60′ pillow bounce, park lighting ceremony and more!

Celebrate San Antonio is the city’s official New Year’s Eve Celebration and Fireworks Extravaganza. This FREE downtown festival features three stages of live music performances, carnival games and rides, delicious festival food (gorditas, mini-tacos, barbeque and funnel cakes) and a fireworks show at midnight.
