We have the first month of 2017 under our belts. There were so many Free in San Antonio events last month and we have just as many – maybe more – for February!

We’ve made every effort to ensure that this list is accurate and up-to-date, however, some venues/events/activities make changes without notifying us. We recommend contacting them before visiting to be 100% sure that their free offerings are still available.

San Antonio | The Saga. This free video art installation, created by Xavier De Richemont, plays three times a night, weather permitting, on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the facade of San Fernando Cathedral.

The San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers (SALSA) offers free stargazing to the public every Wednesday evening beginning at sunset.

CNC: Little Explorers! Little Explorers will come for fun and adventure using their five senses to discover nature. They will listen to stories, sing songs, play games, explore the outdoors, and make crafts to take home. $5 per family. Join Mark Kroeze, TFS Urban Forester in a guided tree identification process online. Good program for families with elementary children and older. Free 1 gallon tree for the first 20 families attending.

Saturday, February 4: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will build a Valentine’s Photo Box. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, February 4: The Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, Texas 78205, 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
First Saturday at The Alamo! On the first Saturday of every month, the grounds of the Alamo are transformed back in time to the 1830s. Dust off your cowboy boots and join us for a special First Saturday as we help kick off the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo with a cowboy themed day at the Alamo.

Saturday, February 4: Friedrich Wilderness Park, 21395 Milsa, 78256, 10:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.
Enjoy a morning geology walk with Geologist Bob Hixon through the picturesque trails of Friedrich Wilderness Park to discuss the local limestone features as well as plant identification. Along the way, discover the many wonders of the park such as the karst feature along Water Trail, and other hill country habitat. Free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)

First Sundays for Families*: Travel the Trade Winds! (11:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.)
Cruise through China, Hawaii, Japan and India on an artistic journey. Make a Lokapala vest, paper lei and paint cherry blossoms at this fun family day. Kids 12 and under get free admission. After 12:00 p.m., adults pay $10 each.

Come enjoy Sunny Ozuna for a Valentine’s Concert at Traders Village. Showtime to be announced. The event is free, but parking is $4.

Imagination Playground at Hemisfair. This free, organized play event at Yanaguana Garden takes place every Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

And, remember: during all other open days/times, the Briscoe offers free admission, year-round, to children 12 and under and to all active military and their families (up to 4 people).

Tuesday, February 7: The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway, 78209, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Free admission to The DoSeum on the first and third Tuesday of every month! Only the first 1,200 guests will be admitted so arrive early. Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum. The cafe will be open with food and drinks for sale.

Thursday, February 9: Schertz Financial Center, 16895 I-35 N, 78154, 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m.
Frost Bank invites you to welcome the return of the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo by coming out for an old-fashioned Chuck Wagon Breakfast. The wagon pulls in at 7:30 a.m. and it will be serving up sausage, bacon, eggs, biscuits & gravy, peach cobbler, coffee and juice until 9:30 a.m. Guests can cheer on the Greater Randolph Area Trailriders as they make an appearance on their way to the rodeo grounds. A fiddler will perform live music.

Friday, February 10: 100 Auditorium Circle, 78205, 8:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
H-E-B Cinema on the Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to the Plaza under the glow of the Tobin Center and enjoy Airplane! The plaza will open an hour before the movie starts. No outside food or drinks are allowed, but concessions will be available for purchase- including full bar service. No Pets Please.

Saturday, February 11: Alamo Stadium, 110 Tuleta, 78212, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
Free heart screenings for teens (14-18) by AugustHeart. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in youth is not a rare occurrence. SCA is the leading cause of non-traumatic death in youth, happening without warning and proving fatal in 92% of cases. Screen Your Teen is a free heart screening program offered to any San Antonio area teenager in an effort to prevent or reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in youth. The heart screenings include an ECG and if necessary, an ECHO.

Saturday, February 11: Cibolo Nature Center, meet at Visitor’s Center, 140 City Park Road, Boerne, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Join Cibolo Nature Center for their 2nd Saturday Volunteer Day of Service. Volunteers will be mulching the Inspiration Gardens. If you have gloves, bring them. Also, wear sturdy shoes.

Saturday, February 11: Friedrich Wilderness Park, 21395 Milsa, 78256, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Take a walk on the wild side with Tom Kinsey of Learn Nature and Michelle Camara of Southern Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation.  Get up close with mammals and reptiles; learn about their habitat and behavior through lively talks and demonstrations! Free admission on the second Sunday of each month. Experience life as a Buffalo Soldier. Learn how to pack a ruck sack for a frontier patrol, read maps, and track wild animals. Take part in a trap ball game and other activities the soldiers enjoyed while off duty.

Saturday, February 25: Arneson River Theater, 418 Villita St, 78205, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
This free, annual parade celebrating Mardi Gras on the San Antonio River Walk is great fun for the whole family! New Orleans-style entertainment and food is available beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Arneson River Theatre. Food trucks will be on hand and River Walk restaurants will offer Mardi Gras-themed menus as well. The River parade runs throughout the entire downtown area of the River Walk at 4:00 p.m. The public is encouraged to come dressed in masks, costumes and beads.

Saturday, February 25: Tobin Center, 100 Auditorium Circle, 78205, 7:00 p.m. – 10:00 p.m.
Beethoven Maennerchor, the German preservation society in San Antonio, is celebrating a major milestone. The club is turning 150 years old! To celebrate, the Maennerchor, or men’s choir, will be holding a free concert at the Tobin Center. Registration is mandatory as seating is limited.
