Last year my daughter participated in a unique camp like no other in San Antonio. And, the camp was completely FREE!

During one week last summer, I dropped her off every morning at Mission San Jose where she met with writing instructors from the San Antonio Writing Project. They teamed up with the Mission’s park rangers to provide the kids (who were entering grades 4, 5, and 6 in the fall) with a fascinating, one-of-a-kind view into the history and people of Mission San Jose. That leap into history became the inspiration and fodder for some of the fiction and nonfiction stories the kids wrote that week. But, they also wrote pieces on other topics, including poetry and personal essays, as well as getting the opportunity to work on related art projects.

My daughter learned so much at this camp! She learned to love the history of one of San Antonio’s historic missions (which are now a designated UNESCO Word Heritage Site – the only one in Texas and one of only 23 in the whole country!). She became enamored with and developed an appreciation for the people who built the Mission San Jose and those who lived and worked there. She learned to improve her writing and find new and interesting ways to tell stories. She created art, also inspired by the people who built Mission San Jose. And she made great friends who came to this special summer camp from all over the city.

This summer, the San Antonio Writing Project offers this free summer camp for kids again, but this time it takes place at Mission San Juan Capistrano!

San Antonio kids entering grades 4, 5, and 6 in the fall have the unique opportunity to participate in a free Young Writer’s Camp this summer called, Walk in the Footsteps of History, presented by the San Antonio Writing Project and in partnership with the National Parks. Led by Dr. Sandra Murillo-Sutterby and Nora Gonzalez, the camp will be held at Mission San Juan Capistrano this summer during the week of July 25 – 29 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

During camp, kids learn to grow their writer’s craft, share their writing with peers, grow as both artisans and thinkers, and celebrate their writing and other projects on the last day of camp on Friday, July 29th, with parents and friends invited.

The Young Writer’s Camp is designed for kids who already love to write and who want to improve their writing and storytelling skills.

From personal experience I can tell you that a camp of this caliber should cost a few hundred dollars at least. The fact that it’s free is incredible. And, it fills up quickly!

Enrollment is limited and will be offered on a first come, first served basis. Secure your child’s spot today by registering online for Walk in the Footsteps of History Young Writer’s Camp. Hurry, as I’m sure this camp will fill up right away.

Mission San Juan Capistrano is located at 9101 Graf Rd., San Antonio, 78214.
