Where the wild things are: San Antonio Zoo Summer Camp!

As a Zoo Troop blogger, I receive free admission to the San Antonio Zoo and other perks and experiences throughout the year, including attending a recent preview of Zoo Camp. However, all opinions are mine and our family paid for our son’s weeks last year and this year at Zoo Camp. Thank you for supporting the brands, nonprofits, and initiatives that support San Antonio Mom Blogs!

Last year, when he was seven, our son attended a week of the San Antonio Zoo’s Summer Camp for the first time. He’s always adored animals and been fascinated by them, so being able to get up close to exotic animals to learn about them and, in some cases, touch them, was exhilarating. Zoo Camp also provides kids with several additional unique experiences including: feeding the giraffes, riding the Zoo’s carousel, and riding the historic Zoo train.

At the San Antonio Zoo Summer Camp, kids meet, touch, feed, and care for exotic animals while learning about conservation

After his awesome visit to Zoo Camp last summer, it was practically all Waylon talked about for the rest of the year! We knew that this year, as summer approached, we’d be signing him up for Zoo Camp again. The only question was, which of the three themes offered would he most want to attend?

Kids entering Kindergarten – 6th grades can choose from the following themes:

  • Animal Engineers – discusses animals’ ability to construct impressive structures
  • Eat or Be Eaten – takes kids on a journey through the world’s tangled food webs
  • Tall Tails – explores the myths, legends, and tall tales of the animal kingdom

And, kids entering grades 7 – 9 select from:

  • Real. Wild. Artists. – takes art into the Zoo while exploring techniques, colors, texture, and art in nature
  • Jr. Zoo Crew – gives a first-hand and hands-on look at the careers of San Antonio Animal Care Specialists

Zoo Camp spots are still available this summer through August 19 so register your child for the adventure of a lifetime today! Zoo Camp runs from 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and extended care is available. Kids bring their own lunches each day but the Zoo provides a snack.

This year, Waylon chose to attend Eat or Be Eaten and he wasn’t disappointed! Here’s a look at his Zoo Camp adventure:
