Got a need for speed? K1 Speed offers unique, thrilling fun for families

Family fun racing go-karts at K1 Speed in San Antonio

Looking for something completely different and exciting to do together as a family? Well, I’ve got something that’s right up your alley! Or, rather, your racetrack.

While this activity may not be the least expensive I’ve recommended, it may just be the most thrilling and every bit worth the splurge!

America’s Premier Indoor Kart Racing Company, K1 Speed offers a heart-pounding, twisting and turning experience you and your kids won’t soon forget. And, they’re located right here in San Antonio.

But, wait. Are you conjuring up images of those old, heavy, stinky go-karts of your youth? Nope! No way. Not any more. K1 Speed go-karts are state-of-the-art, high-performance, zero-emission electric karts. You’ll race around the indoor track with the wind (not smelly gas fumes) flying through your hair.

Who can race?

Kids and teens can race as long as they’re at least 48″ tall. How old would a child that height be? It differs from kid to kid but, as an example, my eight-year-old is 50″ tall (Wait until he hears he’s old enough to get behind the wheel!). Adult racers must be at least 4′ 10″ tall to race (and, all racers should be under 7′ tall and 300 lbs). Novices (as well as experienced drivers) are welcomed!

What about safety?

Prior to racing, every racer attends a brief safety session to learn the track rules and how to operate the karts safely. And, while K1 Speed’s karts are the fastest in the industry, junior karts do go a bit slower (up to 20 mph) than adult karts (which go up to 45 mph).

In addition, each driver must wear closed-toe shoes. A head sock and helmet are also required.

How much does it cost to race?

Every driver needs a license, right? At K1 Speed, yours is just $6 per person for a whole year and it includes free use of a helmet and head sock, online scoring, and monthly email offers. Races start at $19.99 and go up (but the rate per race gets cheaper the more races you buy).

Birthday Parties (and other events) at K1 Speed:

Birthday parties for kids at K1 Speed include a 12-lap qualifying race, a 12-lap final race, medals for the top three finishers, a K1RS racing score sheet, podium photo, evite, and a T-shirt. They start at $44 per person with an 8-person minimum.

Don’t want to let the kids have all the fun? K1 Speed also offers birthday parties for teens and adults, as well as other types of events including bachelor parties, corporate events and team building, Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, Quinceaneras and just about any kind of special event you can imagine.

And, if your kids have a need for speed that just one or two races won’t cure, consider signing them up for a Junior League or Youth League, which run from February – November.

It’s time to hit the track, y’all. I’m pretty sure once I get my brood behind the wheel, they won’t ever want to come out!
