Mayor and Mom, Ivy Taylor on San Antonio Mom Blogs

Morgan is 13-years-old now and pretty confident that she knows a lot more than me and her daddy. Thirteen has been challenging for all of us. When Rodney watches television and sees Pampers commercials, he says wistfully, “Remember when Morgan was that little?” Morgan frowns as we reminisce about her younger years.

Last week, Morgan had a bad cough and I took her to the doctor. We were sitting in the waiting area and the television was on CNN reporting political stories. There was a reference made to action taken by the “Freedom Caucus” of one of the political parties. Morgan looked at me and said, “Mommy, why do they call it the Freedom Caucus?”  I wasn’t sure where she was going with the question so I told her I did not know why that was the group’s name. Then Morgan said, “But isn’t that a dead animal?” Then I suddenly understood.  “No,” I said. “That is a CARCASS

I laughed out loud and kissed her.

Mayor and Mom, Ivy Taylor: Morgan, my 13-year-old baby

It was brief moment where I felt like I was back with two-year-old Morgan who was discovering the wonder of the world and running to Mommy to help explain things. It felt fabulous! It reminded me of the joys of taking care of her, watching her grow, and explaining things. It reminded me that even though she is in a young woman’s body now and she frequently has that 13-year-old attitude, she will never stop being my baby.

When Morgan was about three, we had a nickname game. Since she was born, I called her “Punkin.” Then, when she was old enough to talk, I would add names of things she liked. Eventually one day when she was about three, a friend asked her, “What’s mommy’s special name for you?” And she replied, “Punkin, sugarlump, dumpling, sweet potato, Popsicle, pudding, kolache!” Sitting there in that doctor’s office, I had a rare view of my punkin, sugarlump, dumpling, sweet potato, Popsicle, pudding, kolache, and it was great!
