Pin Tested: The Stickiest Mess of Deliciousness You’ll Lick All Year

Trying out Pinterest recipes

Prepping for the kitchen chaos

In September I wrote about my attempts at baking and crockpotting (yes, I’m sure that’s a word) recipes found on Pinterest with mixed success. In fact, I’ve got a whole Pinterest board called Eat It Up where I save recipes and food porn for my husband so he can cook them for me. My generosity abounds.

As I mentioned before (and I’m sure you know), Pinterest is fun. And addictive. And pretty, oh so pretty. But sometimes I feel the need to actually try out the cool tips, ideas, and recipes I find there instead of simply drooling over them. I also enjoy jetting off to the insanely beautiful tropical locales on my Travel board. Ahem. As if. But recipes? I can handle. Sort of. Well, maybe not. But I give ’em the old college try (whatever that is).

chocolate banana popsicles

The stickiest mess of deliciousness you’ll lick all year.

One dessert idea caught my eye a few weeks ago and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since: Nutella Popsicles. Super simple ingredients (bananas and Nutella) plus ridiculously easy directions (Blend!) made it a recipe made in I-can’t-cook heaven, otherwise known as My Life. Although the recipe made it look easy (and gorgeous – nom nom nom) to whip up these popsicles, I hit a few bumps. Which? To be expected, I suppose (see “I can’t cook,” above).

People, I took this yummy shot with my iPhone. I’m officially a food photographer. And, so are you btw.

I know. You’re chuckling to yourself and asking, “How difficult can it be to throw Nutella and bananas into a blender and push a button (moron)?” And I’m going to answer (indignantly) – it’s mildly difficult. We’re not talking “cut-up-raw-chicken-without-throwing-up” difficult. And it wasn’t even “go-through-80-tissues-and-a-tourniquet-in-an-attempt-to-chop-an-onion-without-dying-from-a-severed-artery” difficult. But making Nutella popsicles is sticky business. It’s messy. And it’s dangerous.* You’ve got to stir it all up every few seconds in between blending if you don’t want your banana/Nutella concrete mixture to burn out your blender’s motor. And I had no idea. Because the pretty picture of Nutella popsicles on Pinterest made it seem sooooo easy.

Everything on Pinterest looks so appealing, so gorgeous, so effortless. And somehow merely viewing these amazing things makes us feel that we can elevate ourselves and — heck — our lives to that level of sophistication, creativity, and beauty if only we could make/wear/cook/say/invent those things too. We can’t. Or, at least, we can’t always.

But sometimes, even when they’re messy, Pinterest tips and recipes are so very, very right. And these sticks of frozen chocolatey, banana-ey, chunkiness are exactly that.

* About six bananas were harmed in the making of this Pinterest recipe.

  1. I too have been inspired by Pinterest — I’ve made blackberry pie in a mason jar. Right now they freezing, so I need to try baking them to complete the process. Then I’ve tried Blueberry Buttermilk Coffee Cake, Roasted Cauliflower Soup. I have all the ingredients for caramel stuffed apple cider cookies. But why is it all the desserts that I want to try instead of the healthy stuff?

BTW, I’m a Pinterest crackhead. I need intervention.

Ellen, you’ve tried so many recipes from Pinterest. You should be writing this post. 🙂 I’m drawn to the desserts too. They look so pretty. And, I’d help you with your Pinterest addiction but I’m suffering from one of my own so, good luck with that!

  2. I know of your cooking skills…only because they rival my own. How about you leave the cooking to your husband and you and I go out for martinis?

    • colleenpence says:

Yes, we’re peas in a pod when it comes to cooking, aren’t we? 🙂

As for martinis, YES and YES. And, when?
