Disclosure: I received complimentary tickets to the Symphony’s 75th anniversary concert. All opinions are mine. Photos, courtesy of the San Antonio Symphony.

It’s true: I’m partial to our local orchestra. After my internship there during college, the San Antonio Symphony hired me as their marketing manager. The three years I spent promoting one of San Antonio’s most prestigious and longest-running arts organizations is, to this day, a highlight of my career.

Working at a nonprofit often requires you to wear many hats and to embrace unique opportunities not always found at entry-level jobs. I thrived under the guidance of my boss and mentor, Covita Moroney. I honed my marketing and PR skills, working on tight deadlines with even tighter budgets. And I wrote, produced, and directed a five-part series about the history of the San Antonio Symphony that ran on KLRN back in 1995 (I still have the VHS tape recordings – want to see them?!?).

I’ll be forever grateful that my first job out of school was one that taught me to think on my feet, to roll with the punches and twist them to an advantage, and to envision challenges as opportunities.

But my time at the San Antonio Symphony gave me something else too: a love and appreciation for classical music and the talented musicians who create it.

With an orchestra you are building citizens, better citizens for the community.”
– Venezuelan conductor and violinist Gustavo Dudamel
