The Do Seum: San Antonio’s new children’s museum is perfect for our City on the Rise

A look at San Antonio's new children's museum: The Do Seum

San Antonio is a City on the Rise, and nowhere is that more apparent than in the effort to create a sustainably developed, state-of-the-art museum for the children of San Antonio.

The Do Seum, which opens to the public on June 1, 2015, encourages imaginative and investigative play around the areas of science, technology, engineering, math, arts, and literacy. By bringing these concepts to life in a modern space, using indoor and outdoor exhibits that connect kids directly to the world around them, we’re including our youngest citizens in our city’s exciting ascendancy.

Here are just a few of the impressive highlights from my recent hard-hat tour of The Do Seum:

The new Do Seum was developed with sustainability in mind:

STEM-based exhibits, along with others centered around art and literacy, will be the focus of San Antonio’s new children’s museum.

The Do Seum will feature an indoor cafe with healthy, affordable options to keep guests staying and playing:

There will also be plenty of dedicated spaces within The Do Seum that the public can rent for birthday parties and community events:

Do Seum staff members were tight-lipped on what the new exhibits will have in store (they’re still under development!) but they did say:

And, what could be more thrilling for kids (and adults) than a piano staircase? I can already hear my feet tickling those ivories.

During the tour, those of us who love many things about the current San Antonio Children’s Museum wondered, “What’s coming over to the new Do Seum from the old museum?”

More cool facts about The Do Seum:

    • The Do Seum aims to bring San Antonio children together to provide them all with the same learning opportunities.
    • A video monitor in the Explore My World exhibit will allow San Antonio kids to see children in The Do Seum’s sister city museum in Mexico City.
    • The Do Seum will include a five-foot-wide, three-inch-deep river in the outdoor exhibit space – no other children’s museum in the state has anything like it. This river will include a system to keep its water clean and sanitary as it flows.
    • The 2,700 sq foot theater is not only available for private events, it will be an active part of The Do Seum during operating hours for programming, plays, and performances.
    • 500 families in San Antonio have an opportunity to make San Antonio history by donating to the Do Seum and having their names and/or messages engraved on permanent paver stones, benches, and trees that will be featured around the museum. Here’s how to become one of the First 500.

The Do Seum opens to the public in June 2015 and our family can’t wait! In the meantime, you can view the construction evolution here and you can follow The Do Seum on Facebook.

  1. A piano staircase! Yes, yes and more yes! I’m also very excited about the live connection to Mexico City. It sounds like this is going to be a fantastic spot to take the little guy.

  2. You did such a great job capturing all the little details. Addie had a great time “building an elevator” out of PVC pipe in the cool underground gift shop area–cannot wait to see this beautiful museum finished!
