Free fun for families in San Antonio in August 2015

San Antonio Mom Blogs welcomes local blogger and guest contributor* Sara Phillips, with Sensibly Sara, who compiled this list of free fun you can have with your family in San Antonio this August.

Can you believe it’s August already?! School will be back in session before we know it, but there is plenty of free (or nearly free) fun to take advantage of before that happens.

FREE, month-long art classes for kids, ages 5-17, in San Antonio at the Southwest School of Art. Registration is now open and spots fill quickly! Saturday Morning Discovery at the Southwest School of Art provides free two-hour art sessions on Saturdays for one month, for kids ages 5-17. San Antonio children get the opportunity to experiment with many different kinds of art techniques and media, all for free.

Kids eat FREE at Shoney’s in San Antonio (and beyond) Mondays through Fridays during the month of August.
Now through August 31st, all day Monday through Friday, Shoney’s celebrates the back-to-school season with a Kids Eat Free promotion: Kids 10 years and younger can enjoy one free meal and beverage of their choice with the purchase of one regular priced adult entrée or buffet. The free meal for kids can be either a kids’ menu entrée or buffet. There is a limit of one free kids’ meal per adult meal purchased. This coupon is required. Shoney’s is located at: 8206 N Interstate 35, 78239.

FREE admission to the Witte Museum every Tuesday between 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. 
Free Tuesdays are generously supported by Bolner’s Fiesta Products, Inc., BBVA Compass Bank, Macy’s, and NFA Wealth Management. The Witte Museum is located at: 3801 Broadway Street, 78209.

Saturday, August 1: Phil Hardberger Park West (Urban Ecology Center), 8400 N.W. Military Highway, 78231, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Geology Rocks program. David Turner, PhD in Geology and Assistant Professor of Environmental Science at St. Mary’s University, gives a hands-on presentation about rocks, minerals and fossils. Bring in your rocks or fossils that you are unable to identify. Free to attend but a suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per family is welcomed.

Saturday, August 1: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will make a chalkboard door hanger. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, August 1: North Central Baptist Hospital’s 10th! Summer Celebration, 520 Madison Oak Drive, 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. 1st 500 people will receive a special 10th anniversary gift. Lots to do including a stuffed animal and toy check up and free health screenings. Pre-register the kids for a cooking workshop at 10:30 a.m. by calling 210.297.7005

Free craft for kids. This week kids create a Friendship Day Keepsake.

Sunday, August 2: San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones, 78215, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
AND
First Sundays for Families: Caricatures, Culture & Covarubbias (12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.) Learn about portraiture, have your caricature drawn; and participate in sketching in the galleries for families. Kids get free admission. After 12:00 p.m., adults pay $10 each.

Tuesday, August 4: The Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market Street, 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
The Briscoe Western Art Museum offers free admission on Tuesdays from 4:00 p.m. -9:00 p.m. Tonight the program includes a book club (Still Wild Ed by Larry McMurtry) and a gallery talk (Photographs of the West).

Tuesday, August 4: The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway, 6:00 p.m. – 8:30 p.m. Join The DoSeum and KLRN to celebrate the start of a new school year! Discover, Explore, Create and Learn at the seventh annual Back to School Bash! Explore exhibits and enjoy school readiness activities. Limited to the first 1500 people so get there early to ensure entry.

Tuesday, August 4: Museum Reach of the San Antonio River (intersection of Camden and Newell St., 7:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Bat Loco, presentations for families about San Antonio bats, is back! Bring your family and lawn chairs to learn all about bats.

Friday, August 7: Medina River Natural Center, 15890 Hwy 16 S., 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Youth, ages 5 to 10, are invited to learn the basics of fishing including how to bait a hook, how to cast, and how to take the fish off the hook. Catch and release only. A donation of $3 per individual or $5 per family is suggested. Bamboo poles and worms are supplied but feel free to bring your own poles and bait. To register call 207-3106.

Friday, August 7: Tower Plaza at the Tower of the Americas, 739 E. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd., 78205, 7:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m. Free concert series. Food and beverages available for purchase. Family-friendly.

Friday, August 7: outdoor Amphitheater, Wonderland of the Americas, Loop 410 and I-10 on Fredericksburg Road, 7:30 p.m.
The Balcones Heights Jazz Festival provides free concerts open to the public. Tonight’s line up includes Rodney Bowens at 7:30 p.m. and Peter White at 9:00 p.m. Seating on the amphitheater lawn is first-come, first-served so arrive early for a prime spot. Food and beverages are for sale from booths onsite and in the food court of Wonderland of the Americas.

Friday, August 7: San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones, 78215, 8:30 p.m. – 10:00 p.m. Free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art’s Family Flicks. Join us for Song of the Sea. Family Flicks is held in collaboration with Slab Cinema. Films begin at sundown in the West Courtyard. Bring your lawn chairs, blankets and picnics to enjoy. During inclement weather, films will be cancelled.

Saturday, August 8: at participating Lowe’s stores, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Lowe’s Build and Grow. Your child will build Hulk’s Tank as part of Lowe’s “Marvel’s Avengers Assemble” Summer series. PLEASE NOTE: registration for this event opens July 27 and fills quickly! Here’s where to register.

Saturday, August 8: Inspire Art, 200 Queen Anne Court, San Antonio, Texas 78209, 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Free Family Art Day takes place at Inspire Art every second Saturday of the month.

Saturday, August 8: Cibolo Nature Center, Herff Farm, 33 Herff Rd, Boerne, TX, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Kids’ Club: Creek Walk! Join this free excursion and explore Cibolo Creek. No drop-offs. Suggested donation of $5 per family.

Saturday, August 8: Lady Bird Johnson Park, 10700 Nacogdoches, 10:00 a.m. San Antonio Spur Antonio Daniels and his wife Sonia have joined forces with the Parks and Recreation Department to offer Get Fit SA. Join the Daniels for a fun and exciting workout as they co-host a Zumba class at Lou Hamilton Community Center.

Tuesday, August 11: Museum Reach of the San Antonio River (intersection of Camden and Newell St.), 6:00 p.m.
Bat Loco Bash: The San Antonio River Authority ends its annual Bat Loco series with a FREE family-friendly festival. Featuring live music, more than 20 local organizations offering FUN Children’s activities, delicious food and drinks by local food truck vendors, guest appearances by Echo the Bat, the SA Batman, and hundreds of Mexican Free-tailed bats emerging from under the HWY 35 bridge at dusk.

Come join us for our 5th free Back to School concert. Bring your dancing shoes and your lawn chairs and enjoy the best of Tejano, blues and country music. If you are willing, bring school supplies to be donated in the designated drop off areas. Concert is free and parking is $3 per carload.
