We’ve made every effort to ensure that this list is accurate and up-to-date, however, some venues/events/activities make changes without notifying us. We recommend contacting them before visiting to be 100% sure that their free offerings are still available.

February is the month of love. And I love all the free activities happening for families in San Antonio!

Imagination Playground at Hemisfair. This free, organized play event at Yanaguana Garden takes place every Monday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Hemisfair puts out their Big Blue Blocks for children ages two and up. Hemisfair staff and volunteers lead organized play that is fun, active and educational.

Free Tuesday Nights at the Briscoe Western Art Museum! Everyone gets in free on Tuesday nights from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to enjoy special programs, music, and more. Tonight, join artist Becca Borrelli who is teaching two hand lettering classes (5:15pm and 7:15pm). Make a mini work of art using words and tuck it in to your Pony Express Love Letter! You get museum admission, the class, Pony Express Love Letter writing stations, and the gallery talk at 6:30 all for FREE. And, remember: during all other open days/times, the Briscoe offers free admission, year-round, to children 12 and under and to all active military and their families (up to 4 people).

Free admission to The DoSeum on the first and third Tuesday of every month! Only the first 1,500 guests will be admitted so arrive early. Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum. The cafe will be open with food and drinks for sale.

Wednesday, February 3: Cibolo Nature Center, Herff Farm, 33 Herff Rd, Boerne, TX, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
CNC: Little Explorers! Little Explorers will come for fun and adventure using their five senses to discover nature. Crystal Vargas Marketing hosts a free Community Resource Fair featuring free health screenings, nonprofit programs, and family activities, including basketball, kids’ Zumba demo, raffles, free goodies, and painting and gardening fun.

Friday, February 5: St. Joseph South San Catholic Church, 535 New Laredo Hwy, 78211, 7:00 p.m.
Free concert by San Antonio’s own David Kaufmann: Lenten Parish Mission Night with song and story. All are welcome to this concert event. A Love Offering will be collected and CDs will be available for purchase.

Saturday, February 6: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will build a Valentine’s Mailbox. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, February 6: Alamo Plaza and along Houston Street, with the parade beginning at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital, see times below
The Annual Western Heritage Parade and Cattle Drive, free to attend (and quite a site to see!), takes place on Saturday, February 6, this year. The parade starts at 11:00 a.m. at Christus Santa Rosa Hospital and runs down Houston Street through the heart of San Antonio, to the Alamo. But free family fun–including games and activities for kids and free chuck wagon biscuits and gravy–is also happening in Alamo Plaza from 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.

Saturday, February 6: Phil Hardberger Park West, 8400 N.W. Military Highway, 78231, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
The San Antonio River Authority (SARA) will present an engaging, hands-on activity to help spark curiosity and create a joy for learning about how to be watershed wise. A kid-friendly activity is included. A donation of $3 per person or $5 per family is suggested. Call 210-207-3782.

Saturday, February 6: TriPoint, 3233 N. Saint Mary’s St., 78212, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Free heart screenings for teens (14-18) by AugustHeart. Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) in youth is not a rare occurrence. SCA is the leading cause of non-traumatic death in youth, happening without warning and proving fatal in 92% of cases. Screen Your Teen is a free heart screening program offered to any San Antonio area teenager in an effort to prevent or reduce the incidence of sudden cardiac death in youth. The heart screenings include an ECG and if necessary, an ECHO.

Saturday, February 6: Friedrich Wilderness Park, 21395 Milsa, 78256, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Feel the calming effect of nature with a two-hour fitness hike along Main Loop and Restoration Way trails at Friedrich Wilderness Park. This hike will cover approximately 4.5 miles of picturesque trails across canyon tops, and through meadows and woodlands. Be sure to bring adequate water! Suggested donation: $3 per person. Free craft for kids. This week kids create a Lots of Love Suncatcher.

Saturday, February 6: The San Antonio River Walk, Arneson River Theatre, and La Villita, 1:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m.
This free, annual parade celebrating Mardi Gras on the San Antonio River Walk is great fun for the whole family! New Orleans-style entertainment and food is available beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Arneson River Theatre. Food trucks will be on hand and River Walk restaurants will offer Mardi Gras-themed menus as well. The River parade runs throughout the entire downtown area of the River Walk at 4:00 p.m.  and again at 5:00 p.m. rink specials. Free fun at La Villita includes the New Orleans selfie zone and mask making. The public is encouraged to come dressed in masks, costumes and beads.

Saturday, February 6: Central Library, 600 Soledad St., 78205, 2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
Celebrate the Chinese New Year with the San Antonio Public Library. The Auditorium on the first floor of the Central Library will be filled with fun activities for all ages to enjoy, including a tea tasting, brush painting, dragon puppets, lanterns, and more surprises. Open your own red envelope to open for good luck in the New Year and enjoy Mandarin oranges to ensure strong friendships. Adults and children will learn more about Chinese culture through the activities and there will be plenty of books available for checkout on a variety of related topics. And, of course, you can take one more stroll through the captivating “Book Garden” in the Gallery before it leaves San Antonio on February 20.

Come stroll wing-in-wing with your favorite people at the Love Bird Nature Walk. Participants will partake in some sweet treats before adventuring along the river to search and learn about the San Antonio River’s urban wildlife, as well as easy ways to be watershed wise by becoming a Citizen Scientist with the free iNaturalist.org smartphone app. Love birds should expect to walk a short distance along the river to seek out secretive birds and reptiles. H-E-B Cinema on the Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets and enjoy Fifty First Dates! Snuggle up with blankets and enjoy hot chocolate on the Plaza under the glow of the Tobin Center. Medina River Native Plant Walk. Join us as Botanist for the Texas Nature Conservancy, Bill Carr, leads a guided tour along the Medina River for a hands-on discussion about the many important native plants that live in the Medina River Natural Area. Saturday, February 13: Hill Country Science Museum, 101 S. Lady Bird Lane, Johnson City, 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Enjoy free admission to the Hill Country Science Museum today in honor of their 1st birthday! The University of Texas Physics Circus presents exploding bottles, flying balls, an electric pickle and other science demonstrations from 1-2pm. Other delightful experiments and hands-on activities include smoke ring air cannons, an interactive Lissagraph and Fruity Tunes, and the Science Mill’s own large-scale interactive fruit piano will entertain the partygoers.

Luminaria, Take Two! This February Luminaria returns to the San Antonio Museum of Art on Friday, February 19 and on Wednesday, February 24, for an evening of multidisciplinary art. Luminaria artists transform the historic museum campus into an immersive art environment. You’ll experience live music, surprising multimedia visual art, and thought-provoking theatre and poetry performances. Dress warmly for this special one-night-only winter event, and take an art walk along Jones Avenue to check out newly-commissioned outdoor murals by Luminaria 2015 artists. Luminaria is FREE and open to the public. Food & Beverages will be available for purchase at this event.

Saturday, February 20: Basura Bash, all around San Antonio, 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Basura Bash is a one day, all volunteer event to clean the San Antonio Watershed. Registration is now open! Every volunteer will need to sign release forms in order to participate. This is a great opportunity for the whole family to get out and volunteer together!

Snow Day at Brooks City Base. 80,000 pounds of snow will turn Brooks City-Base into a winter wonderland! Elsa and Anna will make an appearance and children are invited to attend in costume. Free online parent training event: Raising Cyberstrong Kids. Hosted by Mike Osterhage, KSAT TV. Opening message by Senator Jose Menendez about, “David’s Law.” Featuring internationally recognized bullying experts Dr. Sameer Hinduja & Brooks Gibbs. You can register for this free online event here.

O – Open lines of communication between parents and educators.

Imagination Playground at Hemisfair. This free, organized play event at Yanaguana Garden takes place every Monday from 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. Hemisfair puts out their Big Blue Blocks for children ages two and up. Hemisfair staff and volunteers lead organized play that is fun, active and educational.

Experience the Art of Henna at the San Antonio Public Library! Receive free temporary skin decoration from henna artists. Mehndi is the term used for application of henna, a plant-based dye, as a temporary skin decoration. Henna/Mehndi is thousands of years old, and stems from many ancient cultures. It is mostly known today for its prevalence in India. Don’t miss the chance to experience this unique art form on your hand, for free! For more information about the program call 210-207-2500.

Free Tuesday Nights at the Briscoe Western Art Museum! Everyone gets in free on Tuesday nights from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to enjoy special programs, music, and more. Tonight the program includes a book club (at 5:30 p.m.) and a Gallery Talk (6:30 p.m.). And, remember: during all other open days/times, the Briscoe offers free admission, year-round, to children 12 and under and to all active military and their families (up to 4 people).

CNC: Little Explorers! Little Explorers will come for fun and adventure using their five senses to discover nature. Book Garden and Story Time at Yanaguana Gardens at Hemisfair Park. Every Thursday in Yanaguana Gardens, bring your kids to Hemisfair for a fun, outdoor story time! Hemisfair staff provides a mobile book garden for kids to enjoy. Borrow books from the library to take home and bring books from home to donate to the library. And hear great stories each week.

Saturday, February 27: Phil Hardberger Park West, 8400 N.W. Military Highway, 78231, 8:00 a.m. – 10:00 a.m.
Do you love birds? Join Patsy & Alan Kuentz and Lora Reynolds on a sunrise bird walk to spot the many beautiful birds that can often be seen in the park. A donation of $3 per person or $5 per family is suggested. For more information call 210-207-3280.

Free craft for kids. This week kids create a Fantastically Funny Fish.

Join Slab Cinema for Movies by Moonlight. The movie is The Alamo starring Dennis Quaid, Billy Bob Thornton, Jason Patric, Patrick Wilson and Emilio Echevarría. Get there early for a good spot. The movie will start at dusk.

Sunday, February 28: Wonderland of the Americas, 4522 Fredericksburg Rd, 78201, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Free to attend, the Classic and Custom Car Show benefits John Ozuna. There will be trophies, door prizes, a $5 Raffle, DJ/Live Music, and a Special Appearance by Art Tijerina
