It’s San Antonio so we’ve had nice weather for a while now, but it’s time to get outside and enjoy all the Free in San Antonio: March & Spring Break 2017 events this month! Plus, with Spring Break in the middle of the month, we have plenty of free fun for you to take advantage of.

We’ve made every effort to ensure that this list is accurate and up-to-date, however, some venues/events/activities make changes without notifying us. We recommend contacting them before visiting to be 100% sure that their free offerings are still available.

San Antonio | The Saga. This free video art installation, created by Xavier De Richemont, plays three times a night, weather permitting, on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the facade of San Fernando Cathedral.

The San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers (SALSA) offers free stargazing to the public every Wednesday evening beginning at sunset.

CNC: Little Explorers! Little Explorers will come for fun and adventure using their five senses to discover nature. They will listen to stories, sing songs, play games, explore the outdoors, and make crafts to take home. $5 per family. Join us for a fun-filled family activity with the UTSA – The University of Texas at San Antonio to learn more about the monarch butterfly, its habitat and migration pattern. There are two presentations – one at 11 a.m. and another at 2 p.m., both in Central Games Plaza.

Every First Friday we bring the Hemisfair Art Market to the park, plus music, food and fun activities to keep your whole family moving!

Join Slab Cinema for Movies by Moonlight. The movie is Red Tails. Get there early for a good spot. The movie will start at dusk.

Friday, March 3: Hemisfair, 434 S Alamo St., 78205, 7:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Join Camp Gladiator as they host a FREE Friday evening fitness camp that promises a fun and motivating environment where men and women of all ages and fitness levels can push themselves to reach their goals. There is no fee for these classes. Camp Gladiator’s mission is to positively impact the physical fitness and ultimately the lives of as many people as possible!

Friday, March 3: 100 Auditorium Circle, 78205, 8:00 p.m. – 11:00 p.m.
H-E-B Cinema on the Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to the Plaza under the glow of the Tobin Center and enjoy Raiders of the Lost Ark! The plaza will open an hour before the movie starts. No outside food or drinks are allowed, but concessions will be available for purchase- including full bar service. No Pets Please.

Saturday, March 4: Phil Hardberger Park West (Urban Ecology Center Gathering Hall), 8400 N.W. Military Highway, 78231, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Kids of all ages will love Dinosaur George, also known as George Blasing. The world renowned paleontologist will present an amazing program on Texas dinosaurs complete with a wide variety of fascinating props. No registration is required. Free to attend but a donation of $3 per person or $5 per family is appreciated.

Saturday, March 4: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will build a Rain Gauge. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, March 4: The Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio, Texas 78205, 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
First Saturday at The Alamo! On the first Saturday of every month, the grounds of the Alamo are transformed back in time to the 1830s. Join us for a full day of living history fun that the whole family will enjoy. Learn about life in frontier Texas with special demonstrations and crafts.

The Alamo presents its ever-popular Fiddle Fest, a FREE event on the Alamo grounds featuring a full day of western swing, bluegrass, and old time country from world renowned artists Jason Roberts (Asleep at the Wheel, Van Morrison), Rick McRae (George Strait), and Ron Knuth (Willie Nelson, Hank Williams, Jr.).

Free children’s event for Jon Lasser’s Grow Happy. In Grow Happy, Kiko also demonstrates how she cultivates happiness, just like she does in her garden. Using positive psychology and choice theory, this book shows children that they have the tools to nurture their own happiness and live resiliently. Includes a “Note to Parents and Caregivers” with information on how our choices and paying attention to our bodies and feelings affects happiness.

Meet Pegasus, Chinese dragons, hydras, and more enchanting creatures as you navigate the realms of fantasy. Invent your own magical animal. Kids 12 and under get free admission. After 12:00 p.m., adults pay $10 each.

Monday, March 6: Yanaguana Gardens, 434 S Alamo St, 78205, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Imagination Playground at Hemisfair. This free, organized play event at Yanaguana Garden takes place every Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tuesday, March 7, at participating IHOP Restaurants, 7:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m.
FREE pancakes with IHOP’s Free Pancakes promotion. Enjoy a free short stack of buttermilk pancakes and consider making a donation for the Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals and/or other designated local charities. The goal this year is to raise $3.5 million for charity!

Tuesday, March 7: Whole Foods Quarry Market, 255 E Basse Rd #130, 78209, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Join Whole Foods at the Quarry Market Cafe, the first Tuesday of every month, for the Kids Club Story Time. There will be a story, a snack and some fun activities! This monthly event is free – register here.

Tuesday, March 7: The Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market Street, 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Free Tuesday Nights at the Briscoe Western Art Museum! Everyone gets in free on Tuesday nights from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. to enjoy special programs, music, and more. And, remember: during all other open days/times, the Briscoe offers free admission, year-round, to children 12 and under and to all active military and their families (up to 4 people).

Tuesday, March 7: The DoSeum, 2800 Broadway, 78209, 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m.
Free admission to The DoSeum on the first and third Tuesday of every month! Only the first 1,200 guests will be admitted so arrive early. Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum. The cafe will be open with food and drinks for sale.

Thursday, March 9: McNay Art Museum, 6000 N. New Braunfels Ave., 78209, 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Second Thursdays at the McNay are back and better than ever! We we will be celebrating our namesake Marion Koogler McNay’s birthday and the opening of our new special exhibition, Monet to Matisse: A Century of French Moderns. Experience art and enjoy free general admission to the museum during this family and pet-friendly event that is open to everyone! Tours of the main collection galleries are offered at 6:30 and 7:30 pm. Access to our special exhibition is discounted to $10 per adult. Bring your blanket and lawn chairs to lounge on the grounds while listening to this month’s featured talent The Texases. Beer will be available for purchase along with several food truck options.

Legacy of the Past: Indigenous People of San Antonio – The UTSA Center for Archeological Research will provide a very informative public education program on archaeology and cultural preservation. This program is for older children and adults.

Saturday, March 11: Cibolo Nature Center, meet at Visitor’s Center, 140 City Park Road, Boerne, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Join Cibolo Nature Center for their 2nd Saturday Volunteer Day of Service. Volunteers will be doing projects around the center. If you have gloves, bring them. Also, wear sturdy shoes.

Saturday, March 11: San Antonio Water System, 2800 US Highway 281 N, 78212, 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m.
Spring Bloom is SAWS’ FREE gardening event featuring local gardening and landscape experts to guide you to gardening success while saving water. Past events have included food trucks, a children’s area, gardening demonstrations and a plant sale. And of course, the first 1,000 participants get a free plant! The Museum welcomes families to gather round for family storytime in the gallery on second Saturdays. Stories are followed by a short in-gallery activity. Today’s featured story: How The Kangaroo Got Her Pouch. Free for members or with Special Exhibition admission | Free for Children 12 and under.

Mockingbird Fest and Kite Flying Fandango! A free, fun-filled festival of tasting, moving, and discovering things that make Texas great – only at Hemisfair! Educational activites will teach state history, natural wonders and cultural traditions while local chefs and brewers will serve up the flavors Texans love most. Come enjoy arts, crafts, music and more. It’s an event about Texas, for Texans! You can also color, build and fly your very own kits on the lawn at our First Saturday event – Kite Flying Fandango! Perfect Springtime Fun!

Chavez Blvd. Hosted by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., every day during Spring Break (March 13-17, 2016) these free swim sessions cover a different aquatics activity each day of the week. Monday is: basic swim lessons.

Additionally, visitors can enjoy open swim and participate in additional activities such as relays, family team building activities, games, and more. Lifeguards will be on duty to ensure visitor safety. Participants must wear proper swim attire (no denim please). Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Free, indoor swimming during Spring Break at the Natatorium! Kids, ages 14 and under, are invited to swim for free at the Natatorium in downtown San Antonio at 1430 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. Hosted by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., every day during Spring Break (March 13-17, 2016) these free swim sessions cover a different aquatics activity each day of the week. Tuesday is: swim technique clinic.

Additionally, visitors can enjoy open swim and participate in additional activities such as relays, family team building activities, games, and more. Chavez Blvd. Hosted by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., every day during Spring Break (March 13-17, 2016) these free swim sessions cover a different aquatics activity each day of the week. Wednesday is: junior lifeguard exploration.

Additionally, visitors can enjoy open swim and participate in additional activities such as relays, family team building activities, games, and more. Lifeguards will be on duty to ensure visitor safety. Participants must wear proper swim attire (no denim please). Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

Wednesday, March 15: McNay Art Museum, 6000 N New Braunfels Ave, 78209, 2:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Celebrate art and the scenic French countryside this Spring Break! Enjoy three days of free family fun as you screen print a “Tour de McNay” flag; create art inspired by Chagall, Matisse, Monet, and more; plus take in the charming children’s film The Triplets of Belleville. Bring your bike, trike and helmet Thursday for a special “Tour de McNay” with a demo on bike safety and a ride around the grounds led by San Antonio B-Cycle.

Free, indoor swimming during Spring Break at the Natatorium! Kids, ages 14 and under, are invited to swim for free at the Natatorium in downtown San Antonio at 1430 W. Cesar E. Chavez Blvd. Hosted by the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department from 12:00 p.m. – 3:00 p.m., every day during Spring Break (March 13-17, 2016) these free swim sessions cover a different aquatics activity each day of the week. Friday is: water sports

Additionally, visitors can enjoy open swim and participate in additional activities such as relays, family team building activities, games, and more. Lifeguards will be on duty to ensure visitor safety. Participants must wear proper swim attire (no denim please). Children 10 and under must be accompanied by an adult.

The Luck o’ the Irish festival is Saturday and Sunday (and, includes a festive river parade in downtown San Antonio on Saturday)! Enjoy this free, family-friendly festival in celebration of St. Patrick’s Day:

March 17 at 1pm & March 18 at 2pm, Dyeing of the River Walk Green (transformed into the River Shannon)

The FREE 11th Annual ‘Fest of Tails’ Kite Festival & Dog Fair, a San Antonio family (and dog!) favorite event, includes a sky full of kites, dogs of all sizes and breeds, live music, food, arts and crafts, and more. Bring your blanket or lawn chair to watch the gorgeous air show with stunt kite flyers and you can also participate in a community flying exhibition. And bring your dog in costume for the Pooch Parade.

St. Patrick’s Fun Day for a great celebration. For the adults, green beer will be sold at the ice houses. Free admission to The DoSeum on the first and third Tuesday of every month! Only the first 1,200 guests will be admitted so arrive early. Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum. The cafe will be open with food and drinks for sale.
