McAllister Park in San Antonio, Texas (#1 of 20 for #SA2020Resolutions)

McAllister Park in San Antonio

The first park of twenty we visited this year as part of our #SA2020Resolutions was McAllister Park. But it’s not a stretch for us to go there. It’s practically across the street so we get to play there all year long.

McAllister has everything we want in a park: soccer fields; playgrounds; 15 miles of trails, both paved and unpaved, for walking, running or biking; baseball fields; fitness stations and equipment; pavilions and picnic tables; a dog park; bluebonnets as far as the eye can see in spring; stargazing, and deer, lots and lots of deer.

My kids love climbing on the playgrounds but I prefer exploring the trails. Some visits we manage to fit in both which keeps everyone, including Templeton (our dog and AKA Parkaholic), happy.

The first playground has one structure designed for kids five and under and another for kids ages five to 12. The second playground, near the first set of soccer fields, is geared for kids five to 12 years of age.

Aw, they’re cute. But don’t let them fool you. Our walks are always wild but rarely this tranquil.

We’ve made lots of friends at McAllister Park and many of them are of the four-legged variety. On a recent visit we noticed that a kind soul left plastic bins full of water for them.

Occasionally we bring our friends the gift of dried corn and leave piles for them to feast. A little corn buys a lot of friends.

In the spring, you won’t find a better place to take family bluebonnet photos. McAllister Park is filled with acres of them. Visit the field next to the dog park, on the side of the park with the entrance off of Starcrest.

We’re always finding ways to make our park trips even more fun. Nature scavenger hunts are a hit!

  2. Thanks for the wonderful pics! We’ve been to several of the parks around SA but still haven’t made it to McAllister. There are also stargazer get-togethers on Wednesday evenings that we are interested in checking out, so this may end up being our favorite park!
